The tallest hotel in the world is not in the tallest building in the world – the Burj Khalifa. Instead, it sits in a mega skyscraper in China and is brand new having only opened in the middle of last year. China’s J Hotel Shanghai Tower claims to be the tallest hotel in the world. While its best suites are reputed to cost upwards of $10,000 a night, it’s not in the running to be the most expensive hotel in the world.
The most expensive hotel in the world is very low, in fact, it is under water. The most expensive hotel in the world is reputed to be a charter submarine which costs around $240,000 per night. In the United States, the most expensive room is the New Empathy Suite at the Palms Casino Resort, which costs around $100,000 per night.
Shanghai Tower – China’s Tallest Skyscraper
According to how the height of the building is counted, the Shanghai Tower was just this year downgraded to the 3rd tallest building in the world after being overtaken by the Merdeka 118 in Malaysia.

It has one of the tallest observation decks in the world (on the 118th floor) and the second fastest elevators in the world which rise at a maximum speed of 20.5 meters per second (74 km/h; 46 mph ). The building is divided between offices, shops and leisure.

Hotel J – The tallest hotel in the world
The J Hotel occupies the upper floors of the Shanghai Tower, which is 632 meters or 2,000 feet high. The Shanghai Tower is the tallest tower in China.
This luxury hotel offers 165 rooms including 34 suites. This includes 24/7 personal butler service, an indoor pool, Hermès and Diptyque toiletries, magnolia petal-shaped bathtubs, a luxury spa focused on Reiki treatments, and tea services. Full Chinese in every room according to CNN.

Hotel J offers four options when it comes to suite types; Shanghai Suite, Jin Jiang Suite, J Suite and Grand Suite.
The premium suite is the Shanghai Suite. This luxurious accommodation is 380 square meters and includes a living room, study, kitchen, physiotherapy area and a room just for dressing (as well as the usual bedroom).
Prices are expensive at this hotel. CNN reported that the J Suite cost 67,628 RMB (about $10,467) and prices for the even more expensive Shanghai Suite were not disclosed. However, at the time of writing (March 2022), the J Suite was listed at 4,180 RMB ($660) and the Shanghai Suite at the same price. Maybe the prices are heavily discounted right now.
The tallest hotel in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records is the Gevora Hotel at 356 meters (1,168 feet) – at least until the even taller Sky Tower is completed. This is because the tallest hotel title is normally buildings that are only used as hotel space. The J Hotel only has the upper floors of the Shanghai Tower.
Dinner at Hotel J
The J Hotel offers seven dining options in the hotel, including a Cantonese restaurant called Heavenly Jin on the 120th floor (the top floor). The dress code is smart casual and offers a “fusion of various culinary arts, featuring modern European, Japanese and Chinese cuisines created by top chefs from different countries” – according to their website.
Upon entering the Heavenly Jin restaurant, one will be greeted by a 30-meter-long Italian mosaic on the theme of the Silk Road.

Here, one can enjoy the art of fine dining in the clouds at their seven restaurants which each have their own unique design and artistic decor.

In addition to Chinese cuisine, one can also enjoy Japanese cuisine, Italian cuisine and afternoon tea. In addition to some of the luxury accommodations in the megacity, one can enjoy the best views in town while tasting some of the best food on offer in the city. One can decide whether the mega-towers of Dubai or Shanghai are more to one’s liking.
