The presence of each guest changes the appearance of the hall, making each moment unique and beautiful.

Upon entering a the hotel lobby, there are some pretty standard things that you would expect to see. A check-in counter. A few chairs or sofas. Maybe a free coffee machine.

What you are probably not considering, however, is this.

But it is the captivating spectacle of another world that awaits travelers at the Mifuneyama Rakuen Hotel in Saga Prefecture, on the southwestern island of Japan Kyushu. Sitting high in the mountains of the spa town of Takeo, the hotel is already a popular destination for those who appreciate visual beauty, thanks to its view of the surrounding peaks and forests as well as its proximity to the Mifuneyama Rakuen Garden. These days, however, the hostel has an additional aesthetic upgrade, as the Japanese Twitter user @mitsuyuka_lp learned on a recent visit, and those interested in contemporary Japanese art installations may be able to guess who needs to thank: Team lab.

The renowned arts team, known for their interactive exhibits and mystical light-based atmosphere, are currently preparing for their ‘A Forest Where the Gods Live’ event at Mifuneyama Rakuen, which will open this summer. However, their work on “Forest and spiral of resonant lamps in the forest-one shot”, as the lobby installation is called, is already complete. Stand next to a lamp, and its glow spreads and passes through others, like a drawn line of warm light. Each visitor has the power to influence this change, making the appearance of the lobby at all times a collaborative effect of everyone in the space at that time..

Depending on the hotel, “Dark space represents the deepest parts of Mifuneyama Forest. The countless Venetian glasses hanging from the ceiling represent the flowers, fruits and nuts of the forest and the light filtering through the trees.

In accordance with these natural inspirations, lamp colors will change with the seasons, representing seasonal flora and foliage such as cherry blossoms, azaleas, hydrangeas and red maple leaves. And while Team Lab’s “A Forest Where the Gods Live” will only run from July 16 to November 7, “Forest and Resonating Lamp Spiral in the Forest-One Hit” is thankfully a permanent part of the hotel.
