The best UK hotel openings in 2021 – and top deals for this year

Telegraph Travel’s Hotel Hit Squad columnists look back on their favorite stays of 2021 and what it was like in the hospitality world. From new-age country houses in the Peak District to London’s first “iceberg hotel”, there was plenty to enjoy.

Plus, each writer shares a hot hotel to research and book in 2022.

The Londoner

With no room for missteps, UK hotels have emerged stronger from what has been an extremely difficult year for the industry. I went into 2021 wondering if standards might have dropped due to understaffing and low morale. To my pleasant surprise, new and existing establishments have, where appropriate, upped their game on everything from attention to service to quality of food. The pandemic has also forced hoteliers to be more creative than ever to stand out, whether building a Glastonbury-inspired luxury pop-up glamping hotel on the coast, or creating the country’s most sustainable pub.

With more Britons ready to holiday at home again this year, the north of England, which has had a strong year for hotel openings, such as the trendy restaurant with Joro rooms in Sheffield, is definitely at to watch. I’m particularly looking forward to the opening of Wildes in underrated Chester, complete with rooftop swimming pool and cinema.
