Japanese restaurant with elite culinary talent arrives in neighborhood

Imari opens on San Vicente Boulevard this spring

A Japanese restaurant heads to Brentwood just off the border from Santa Monica, run by a Michelin-starred chef and sushi master.

The restaurant, called Imari, will be located at 13050 boulevard San Vicente. The operation will replace the Nagao restaurant, which occupied the property for 22 years before closing in late 2020.

Imari will feature Washoku cuisine, a Japanese concept that is more than food. In 2013, Japanese cuisine was listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, nicknamed “Washoku”, which translates to “Traditional Food Cultures of Japan”.

“Washoku is a social practice based on a set of skills, knowledge, practices and traditions related to the production, processing, preparation and consumption of food. It is associated with an essential spirit of respect for nature which is closely linked to the sustainable use of natural resources, ”UNESCO wrote.

Imari is run by two elite leaders. The executive chef is David Schlosser, chef of the Michelin-starred Downtown Los Angeles restaurant Shibumi.

“The dishes bring together a range of inspired Japanese flavors, but equal attention is given to texture and artistic presentations,” the Michelin review on Shibumi reads. “There is perhaps no nicer place to learn more about kappo-style cooking.”

Alongside Schlosser is Derek Wilcox, a sushi master who cooked his chops at New York restaurant Shoji.

While cooking at Imari, Schlosser will continue to work at Shibumi, maintaining the two restaurants simultaneously, as reported Los Angeles Eater.

As for when restaurant goers can look forward to dining at the new restaurant, it is slated to open sometime this spring.
