Jai Quitongo in ‘Airdrie tears’ jibe as Queen’s Park striker files racist and sectarian abuse complaint

Jai Quitongo has toasted Airdrie’s ‘tears’ as the Queen’s Park striker has alleged he suffered ‘racist and bigoted’ abuse in the first leg of their final clash with Queen’s Park.

The Spiders were promoted to the Championship after a 2-1 extra-time win at Excelsior Stadium, earning them a 3-2 win on aggregate.

The pair drew 1-1 in the first leg at Firhill last Thursday. Simon Murray was on target for the hosts before Rhys McCabe evened things up with a late penalty.

McCabe gave the Diamonds the lead after just 13 minutes but Queen’s staged a comeback, equalizing through Hearts loanee Connor Smith before Murray prevailed from the spot after 112 minutes.

The champagne was out full time and Quitongo tweeted a photo of himself taking a celebratory sip, and claimed he was racially abused in the first leg clash, in addition to be at the end of derogatory sectarian comments.

He tweeted: “Back 2 back promotions!!! After the racist and bigoted abuse I received on Thursday night it’s just…here’s a toast to you and all your teary Airdrie Football Club.”

Quitongo’s brother Rico was embroiled in a race discrimination case with the Lanarkshire club earlier this year.

The defender claimed he was the subject of a racist remark by one of the club’s supporters during a game last September, and claimed the club portrayed him in a bad light in the way which he then handled the incident.

The 22-year-old claimed ‘his face or his skin didn’t suit him’ after asking to be released from the club in January and has since joined Peterhead.

After conducting an internal investigation, Airdrie said there was insufficient evidence to pursue the matter further.

With regard to Jai Quitongo’s allegation, soccer scotland has contacted Airdrie for comment.
